I received a free upgrade to the king room on the ground floor, but there was a persistent musty smell, similar to a gym locker. The dehumidifier in the room would not work, despite the instructions to juggle the tank until the light turns off. I suspect this is the cause of the smell. "Amazing view from the king suite! Charming character and appreciated keurig with coffee pods and creamer, silverware and paper plates, etc. Walls thin and had some disturbance from one neighbor. Parking is difficult and steep."

"We found The Big Island Rereat to be just as good as the pictures! It was easy to find right off Ali'i drive. Check in and out were both very easy. We stayed in the Ocean View room which was just as advertised. There is no AC which is in the room description so there was no surprise. Ceiling fan and to other larger standing fans kept the air moving through the room. There is a common area which has beach chairs to use and some snorkel gear and boogie boards as well and an outdoor kitchen...

"This is the real Hawaii! The property is located in a relatively remote area about 30 minutes south of Pahoa. Beautiful setting in the middle of a forest not too far from the beach. Isaac Hale Park is within walking distance and although the beach isn’t very safe for swimming there is a pond there that you can swim in. The accommodations are primitive and like camping but Mango Cabin was very spacious and the beds were VERY comfy. It is off-grid but there is electricity to the cabins. The cabins...
