TheAlexander Nevsky Cathedral is one of Sofia’s most emblematic buildings a RussianOrthodox cathedral of incomparable architectural splendour and captivatingreligious art. Admire its Neo-Byzantine façade, opulent décor, mosaics andmurals. Built in the early 1900s, Alexander Nevsky Cathedral honours the 200,000soldiers who lost their lives in the Russo-Turkish War, fighting for theliberation of Bulgaria from Ottoman rule in 1878.
Taketime to stroll around the cathedral and view its collection of domes, belltowers, arched windows and doorways. Look up at the gilded central dome, whichstands 148 feet (45 metres) high, and check out the belfry, containing 12bells. From all angles, the cathedral offers excellent photo opportunities.Visit after sunset when it is illuminated spectacularly by bright lights.
Setfoot inside the cathedral to discover five high-ceilinged naves connected bytall arches. Marvel at the checkerboard floor, sparkling chandeliers andintricate stained-glass windows. A wealth of murals adorn the cathedral’swalls, many portraying scenes that involve Bulgarian and Russian saints. Don’tmiss the impressive mosaic mural of Tsar Ferdinand and his wife Eleonore Reussof Köstritz.
Be sure to visit the cathedral’s crypt to see one of Europe’s largestcollections of religious icons. Spot icons that date between the 15th and the20th centuries, some of which originated from monasteries across Bulgaria.
Situatedin Alexander Nevsky Square, the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is in the heart ofSofia’s city centre. The nearest metro stop is SU Sv. Kliminet Ohridski, whichis a 5-minute walk from the cathedral. A city sightseeing bus stops nearby andparking is available on the square. The cathedral is also a short walk fromother major city attractions. Among these are the National Gallery of ForeignArt and the Cyril and Methodius National Library of Bulgaria.
TheAlexander Nevsky Cathedral is open daily and admission is free. It’s an activecathedral so ensure you dress appropriately and respect worshippers whenvisiting. Photography is prohibited inside the cathedral.
