Marvel at the shiny pebbles and sand of this black beach and snap photos of the elegant lighthouse on a historic location.

Black Sand Beach (Plage de la Pointe Venus) is an extraordinary black beach created by volcanic eruptions. It has a historic lighthouse and is a popular place for sailing. Come to this otherworldly beach with your family and friends to relax and work on your tan.

Gaze up at the elegant Point Venus Lighthouse, which is said to be constructed on the spot where Captain Cook set up an observatory to spot the planet Venus in the night sky. Admire the design of the white eight-floor square tower, which is made out of stone and coral and is 105 feet (32 meters) high. Its unique design looks a bit like a tower of building blocks in graduated sizes stacked one on top of the other.

Capture photos of the black, sandy beach with a backdrop of the sparkling ocean. The surrounding scenery includes towering green mountains. Bring a picnic for a relaxed meal in this remarkable setting. Several large monuments and works of art decorate the beach. Rent one of the va’a sailing boats to take out on the ocean. Stay late to watch the magnificent sunset.

Purchase various artisanal items and handicrafts from the vendors around the beach. These items usually include local pāreu wraparound skirts and tiki sculptures, all at reasonable prices.

The beach has amenities, such as modern showers, making it ideal for families. It is fairly peaceful, but can get quite busy on Sundays. Arrive early in the morning during the week to miss the crowds. There is no fee to use this public beach, which is open at all times.

Black Sand Beach (Plage de la Pointe Venus) is on the northern tip of a headland stretching out from the coast of Māhina in northern Tahiti. Drive here and leave your car in the designated parking lot. See nearby landmarks, such as the viewpoint at Col du Tahara’a, the Royal Pomare Cemetery and Tomb of King Pomare V.
