Conquer the jungle trails and admire the exotic plants of the rainforest before taking shelter from the heat in the park’s blue pool and shaded caves.

St. Herman's Blue Hole National Park is a picturesque region of cave mazes and jungle trails in the heart of Belize’s rainforest. It takes its name from the idyllic pool of water that has become an icon of the park. Look for more than 200 species of birds in the scenic jungle region, in addition to exotic plants and tall trees. Spend days exploring the tropical rainforest and some of its stunning natural features.

As you walk through the forest, try to spot the myriad colourful birds that call it home. Gaze up at the emerald green jacamars, the scarlet-rumped tanagers and the blue-crowned motmots. Listen for the beautiful song of the nightingale wren and the forest’s hummingbirds.

Reach the blue pool itself, which is the highlight of the park. Go swimming in the refreshing water and jump from vines and rocks into the deep pool. The cool water is quite a relief from the humidity of the jungle.

Hike along the jungle paths, such as the Hummingbird Loop, and head into Herman’s Cave. Appreciate the serenity of the small grotto. Bring a headlamp or phone light, as the cave is pitch black. Like the pool, the cave is a respite from the heat of the jungle. Marvel at the fascinating stalagmites and stalactites that grow from the floor and ceiling.

The region is known as St. Herman’s Blue Hole National Park, in reference to one of the main caves. Note that this is not the same as the Great Blue Hole in the sea. The park opens daily from morning until afternoon. The entrance fee has a large discount for local residents.

St. Herman’s Blue Hole National Park is 15 miles (24 kilometres) southeast of the capital city of Belmopan in the centre of Belize. Access the park via the Hummingbird Highway, which is one of the country’s principal roads. Use the large parking area with a set of stairs leading down through the park’s entrance.
