Bonn Arts Museum

View collections of artworks by noted German artists and browse the temporary exhibitions in the beautifully designed galleries of this light-filled museum.

Bonn Art Museum (Kunst Museum Bonn) is an architecturally superb monument to 20th-century art. With its flowing contemporary design and spacious galleries, the Bonn Art Museum is the perfect place to view work by some of Germany’s most famous artists. See prints, photography, sculptures, paintings and videos as you wander through the collection and explore intriguing temporary exhibitions. Alternatively, simply admire the building’s design and attend one of the museum’s exciting events and workshops.

The first thing you will notice about the Bonn Art Museum is the elegant design by architect Axel Schultes. This modern museum provided a welcome change from the museum’s cramped former location. Enter the museum and admire the natural light that floods the foyer. See early modernist and expressionist artworks by German masters and explore the permanent collection dedicated to German art after 1945, which includes works by Gerhard Richter and Wolfgang Tillmans. You’ll also find comprehensive collections of works by Max Ernst, August Macke and Joseph Beuys.

The museum’s magnificent photography gallery has been expanding since the 1990s and showcases some of the greatest photographers of the late 1900s. See photographs by Andreas Gursky, Boris Becker and Katharina Mayer. The video art collection contains nearly 400 works by some of the medium’s most significant pioneers, including Alan Kaprow, Dennis Oppenheim and Les Levine.

Investigate the temporary exhibitions hosted by the Bonn Art Museum, as well as the changing projects held in the museum’s galleries and courtyards. Join an English-language tour of the museum and learn about different fields of art and architecture. Events, talks and children’s workshops are offered, most commonly in German. The museum has an on-site bookshop and café.

The museum has an admission fee, which is reduced for children and students. It is closed on Mondays, as well as some days during the Christmas and New Year’s periods. Bonn Art Museum is located south of downtown Bonn in the Museum Mile district. Served by its own subway station, the area also contains the Museum Koenig, the Bundeskunsthalle and the Haus der Geschichte Bonn.
