Tour the fortress home of Francisco Piria, founder of the seaside town of Piriápolis, to discover the beliefs and motivations of this fascinating man.

Castle Piria is an unmistakable landmark in the town of Piriápolis. Perched on a hilltop, the castle looks down over the seaside town founded by the castle’s owner, Francisco Piria. Embark on a tour of the stout building to appreciate its impressive architecture and to get a glimpse into Piria's mind.

Work on the castle was completed in 1897 and today it remains the embodiment of Piria’s mystical beliefs. He followed a religion called Umbanda, a combination of Christianity and mystical practices. Piria built not only his dream home but the whole town of Piriápolis in a layout which honored the Tree of Life of the Kabbalah and the Constellation of Aquarius. Wander around the town to get a feel for his vision, which was inspired by the beauty of the French Riviera.

The road which sweeps up to the castle’s façade is lined with palm trees shipped from the Canary Islands. It is a dramatic approach, yet just the beginning of what the castle offers. Appreciate the grandeur of the building, with its sturdy towers and robust symmetry. Guarding the entrance are two terracotta statues of Greek gods, crafted by sculptor Tomaso Airaghi, which were originally housed in the stables. In fact, there are symbols of Piria’s beliefs everywhere. Look for the Templar flags waving from the towers and the esoteric symbols in the castle’s bricks.

Tour the ground floor, which is open to the public, to see the resident and guest rooms as well as the kitchen located at the back of the castle. An interesting timeline created by the Heritage Commission of Uruguay provides a history of Francisco Piria and his visionary town. Be sure to stop and take in the views from the castle windows. Gaze across wineries and toward two of Uruguay’s highest mountainsbeyond.

Castle Piria is located just outside the town of Piriápolis, 62 miles (100 kilometers) from Montevideo. Reach this unique and intriguing spot by public bus or taxi.
