Compton Acres

Compton Acres which includes a pond and heritage architecture

The fine historic gardens of late Victorian mixed style were set up in the early 20th century. Peruse the range of exotic sections remaining today.

The variety of colourful flowers on display in the cherished gardens of Compton Acres seems to transport visitors around the world. Whether in the Japanese Garden, the Italian Garden or elsewhere, the arrangement of plants and trees is inspiring and culturally accurate. Tour the 10 acres (4 hectares) of the privately owned grounds.

Among the highlights is the Italian Garden, which features fountains and statues amid the colourful flowers. Sit on a bench and admire the Mediterranean décor, enhanced by the nearby Italian Villa.

Have a hot drink at the teahouse in the Japanese Garden, which is draped in wisteria plants typical in the Asian region. Marvel at the bronze statues imported from Japan in the 1920s. Asiatic flowering shrubs, evergreen Kurume hybrid azaleas and maples generate a range of autumnal colours that reflect wondrously in the pond.

Meander through the Wooded Valley to see ferns and foxgloves. A chain of ponds is connected to appear as a running stream at the bottom of the path. Inspect the impressive works of art on the Sculpture Trail.

Over 300 species of plants await you in the Rock and Water Garden. Stroll along the wooden paths and enjoy the tranquil ambiance around the pond. Climb to the top of the hill in the Heather Gardens for a view of the sea.

Exotic plant specimens are sold at the Plant Centre. Purchase souvenirs from the gift shop and stop for a snack or drink at one of the tearoom cafés.

Visit the centre during its year-round open days, with the exception of Christmas Day and Boxing Day. The doors open from morning until late afternoon, with an earlier closing time in winter. Entry to the gardens requires a fee, with discounts for children and families. The plant centre and gift shop are free to enter.

Compton Acres is east of Poole. Ride the bus for 15 minutes from Poole Harbour to the site, which is 4 miles (6 kilometres) away. The complex has a parking lot with free parking. Nearby attractions include Parkstone and Luscombe Valley Nature Reserve.
