This quiet beach is the perfect location for all kinds of beach lovers. Playa Delfines’ wide, sandy shores are expansive, and seem to stretch for miles. You’ll have no problem finding a quiet spot on this beach, despite it being a popular destination. Catch a few waves, or swim with the kids in the lifesaver-patrolled area. Fringed by Cancun’s dazzling turquoise waters, and with no hotels in the immediate vicinity, Playa Delfines provides the laid-back beach experience that many come to Cancun in search of.
Secure a shady spot under one of the many free umbrellas and spread out your towel. Once you arrive, you won’t want to leave, so finding a shady spot is a must. The beach is home to medium-sized waves and is popular amongst surfers. While there is nowhere to hire surfboards at the beach, it is possible to do so from downtown Cancun.
During the day, Playa Delfines is patrolled by lifesavers, making it a great place to come with small children. Close to the shore, the waves are gentle, and parents are afforded peace of mind knowing that there is a trained medical officer on site.
Playa Delfines translates to “Dolphin Beach”, and is one of the best places in Cancun to see these majestic creatures. They can often be seen from the shore, but chartered tours are also available for those wanting a more intimate experience.
While there are no large restaurants at Playa Delfines, many street vendors operate at the beach offering authentic Mexican cuisine. Aimed at the locals, the food is more traditional and less expensive than in many of the more tourist-orientated restaurants. Try local specialties like fresh fish wrapped in a banana leaf, or Kibis, an old Yucatan favourite.
Playa Delfines is located 10.5 miles (17 kilometres) from downtown Cancun and is best reached by bus or taxi. Playa Delfines offers free parking, a rarity at the beaches of Cancun. This public beach is open all hours, although lifesavers are only present during the day. There is no entrance fee for the beach.
