  • Waldron Lookout, accessible via a spur trail at 1.5 miles up the northern trail. Turtleback Mountain is a wilderness-preservation success story. Recently the target of a development effort on Orcas Island, a popular weekend destination for people from Seattle, it was saved from that fate largely by the efforts of one man and his organization, Tim Seifert, executive director of the San Juan Preservation Trust. Thanks to their work, the mountain is now a wilderness area, in perpetuity. As a bonus, a network of trails is now available to allow hikers and sight-seers a chance to explore the mountain. The trails are beautiful and serene and not nearly as crowded as those on the more popular Mount Constitution, which sits on the other side of the island. There are just a few open viewpoints, such as this one, but they do pack a punch. Beyond that, the forest scenery is just fantastic.

We absolutely loved our time at this cabin! The grounds, the waterfront and the dock were beautiful. The place was super clean, cozy, and had everything we needed. We spent hours just sitting by a fire and playing cards. Everything was easy and welcoming from start to finish. Already planning our next trip back — it was the perfect getaway!

The cabin was very clean and the staff was very friendly! We had a beautiful ocean view and could walk along the beach. Their cafe had an excellent breakfast burrito. Our main complaint was that the shower control went from hot to cold in an instant which was an unpleasant shock. Needless to say I only took the one shower and my wife skipped it completely. Would we come back? Yes.

The room was in great condition, the only thing I would say is please remove the picture in the smaller cabin showing there is a kitchen as that is false advertising. Was very disappointed to find my cabin didn't have the full kitchen.

I liked everything about West Beach Resort. The cabin was very roomy, clean, cute, and had everything you might need. The people at the resort are friendly and helpful. Every cabin has a little fire pit right on the beach, and the staff leaves you a bundle of wood. If you don’t feel like driving to town for dinner, they make pizza!

Rustic resort with beautiful sunsets and amenities. We did have someone lurking around our cabin one evening-claimed to be looking for someone who worked at the property. It was very suspicious. He left our place but hung around the resort for some time. I did not report it at the time as no one was at the front desk.

Overall, we enjoyed our stay, but have a few suggestions for improvements: We arrived 5pm (a common arrival time from the ferry) and the office was closed. The posted written instructions had inadequate information on the location of our parking space, which was far away from our cabin. Locating the parking space in the dark was very frustrating -- it should have been explicitly marked on a map. Better yet, a parking space should be cleared next to cabin 6B. Also, the internet connection was flaky, requiring multiple log-ins every day, which should not have been necessary. Sometimes a local wireless connection was made, but the router did not access the internet. The internet service should be upgraded. We were looking forward to using the hot tub, but it was too cold and rainy to hike the distance. Adding a near-by change station would be worth considering. On the up side, we enjoyed the view and cozy wood stove. Overall, the cost of our stay seemed a bit too steep for the circumstances. (Annoyingly, a 3-for-2 offer advertised when we left was unavailable for us.)
