The Fire Station Artist in Residence is one of Qatar’s newest and most impressive arts facilities. Housed in a historic fire station building, it offers residency programs for flourishing artists who can hone and improve their skills. Visit the Fire Station, a state-of-the-art facility, to see the regular exhibitions and attend arts events held here. Stock up on art supplies in the shop.
Art is flourishing in Doha, and the Fire Station Artist in Residence sits at the heart of the burgeoning scene. Promising artists can spend up to nine months working in a dedicated personal studio and being mentored by fellow creative folks. During that time they will develop their own style and technique, join lectures and participate in exhibitions that are open to the public. Visit in June for the annual public gallery, where you can appreciate the artists’ works. Check the official website for events held throughout the year.
Even when no exhibition or event is scheduled, the Fire Station is worth a visit simply for its impressive architecture. First constructed in 1982 as a civil defense building, it was used by the fire brigade until 2012 when the Qatar Museums began its renovation.
Today the building has retained its history, with modern flourishes including LED lighting creating a contemporary art space. Visit at night to see digital artworks and public messages displayed on the façade of the building.
Budding artists visiting Doha will delight in the well-stocked supply shop that is part of the complex, as well as the bookshop offering English language art books. Have a meal or drinks in the pleasant restaurant and café. Check the website for public openings of the cinema showing avant-garde films.
The Fire Station Artist in Residence is located in the Wadi Al Sail district. Board the bus in Al Ghanim central bus station for the short 20-minute journey or travel here by taxi in 10 minutes. The facility has varied open hours for public visits. The café is open daily, however, from early morning to late evening, except Fridays when it is closed in the morning.
