Get insight into the life and literary works of one of Germany’s most renowned cultural icons in this museum devoted to the famous Faust author.

The Goethe National Museum is devoted to chronicling the life of this famous German figure, showcasing not only his well-known literary achievements but also his influence in political, philosophical and botanical spheres. Gain insight into his life and life’s work by exploring the residence he once called home and by looking at the artifacts on show in the modern annex.

The museum includes a building that was once Goethe’s Weimar home, with additional extensions added to the structure in 1913 and 1935 to house its fast-growing collection. Listen to an audio guide as you explore to find out more background information about the various objects and documents on display.

Take a stroll through the house where the great writer lived for around 50 years. Little has changed here since Goethe’s death. See the perfectly preserved study where Goethe worked and wrote the world-famous Faust, and view the bedroom where Goethe slept and ultimately died.

Inspect items that once belonged to Goethe himself. He was an avid collector and amassed an assortment of artworks, letters, journals and other souvenirs. The museum also has several sculptures and artworks depicting Goethe himself.

Though Goethe is perhaps most well-known for his literary output, he was in many ways a polymath, showing an interest in and having an in-depth knowledge of a wide range of subjects. Browse the exhibition in the annex to discover more about Goethe’s curious nature, and his skills as a statesman and a sketch artist.

Before you leave, take a stroll through the gardens. The peaceful, verdant grounds serve as an oasis in the otherwise bustling Weimar town center.

Find the Goethe National Museum in the south of Weimar’s historic center, less than 5 minutes’ walk from the Marktplatz. The museum is open every day except Monday. Opening hours vary depending on the time of year so be sure to check ahead. An entrance fee applies for all adults, though children under 16 go free.
