Hoia Baciu Forest

Venture deep into a thick Transylvanian forest where locals and visitors have reported otherworldly phenomena and lots of strange happenings.

With stories of ghostly apparitions, UFO sightings and other unexplained events, Hoia Baciu Forest is frequently called the Bermuda Triangle of Romania. Some people claim it is the most haunted forest in the world. Whether or not you believe in phantoms or aliens, its spooky reputation is enhanced by oddly shaped vegetation, such as trees contorted into curved and twisted shapes. Hike through the mysterious green surroundings and camp under the stars. The forest extends for more than 620 acres (250 hectares) and is densely packed with thick undergrowth and beech, oak, elm, wild cherry and many other tree species.

Get some exercise on a vigorous hike or just relax and enjoy the natural surroundings on a gentle walk. Go cycling along the forest’s bike paths. Over the years, people who have ventured into the forest have occasionally reported seeing mysterious orb-like lights and hearing disembodied female voices giggling. See the infamous circle where no trees grow. It is called Poiana Rotunda, the round meadow. To some, this could be the location of a portal to another dimension or a home for ghosts. To others, it is just a forest clearing.

Try to spot local animals. Among the wildlife you may see are rabbits, foxes, wild hogs and deer. Bring a packed lunch with you and enjoy it at one of the picnic sites. As you travel through the forest, look for the peculiarly curved trees, which bend sharply just above ground level.

Contact local operators to book night tours or four-wheel drive expeditions through the thickets. Pack a tent and your overnight gear and stay at one of the campsites.

Find Hoia Baciu Forest 8 miles (13 kilometers) west of the city of Cluj-Napoca in northwestern Romania. There are no designated parking bays at the forest, but you should be able to find spaces on nearby side streets. Admission is free.
