Wander along the charming promenade and inspect the wonderful statues and fountain in gardens built on the city’s old port.

The Jardines de Pereda is a picturesque set of gardens in the heart of Santander’s old quarter. Its elaborate labyrinth of pathways joins its namesake promenade that overlooks the scenic Santander Bay. Enjoy the serene ambiance in this leafy lung that takes you away from the bustle of the city center.

The gardens and the boulevard are named after the local 19th-century novelist José María de Pereda. Admire the monument of the writer, featuring a bust surrounded by engravings that represent the most iconic scenes from his works. Another highlight is the Concha Espina fountain that is dedicated to the respected female author who was nominated for a Nobel prize for literature 25 times.

Wander through the forest comprising more than 200 trees. Thousands of starlings seek refuge here from September through March. Bring a blanket and food and drink for a picnic on a warm and sunny afternoon.

Stroll along the winding walkways with the whole family to find the carousel where your kids can enjoy a ride. They will be entertained by the fun play area in the park. Go for a romantic walk with your partner in the evening and sit at a bench. Relax beside the small pond and its charming bridge. At the southern end of the park is the spectacular modern structure of the Centro Bodín, which has intriguing art exhibitions.

Reach the Paseo de Pereda, a coastal promenade that branches off from the eastern flank of the garden. Admire the intricate stonework, bay windows and balconies of the façades of the buildings adorning the boulevard. Stroll along the passage at sunset and capture photos of the reddening sky over the bay.

The Jardines de Pereda faces Santander Bay by the ferry terminal in the historic center of the city. Arrive at the Santander railway station and walk east for about 10 minutes to reach the gardens. Visit nearby attractions such as Santander Cathedral, the Plaza Porticada and the Refugio Antiaereo Santander.
