John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum

John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum showing a statue or sculpture

Learn about the 35th president of the United States at this revealing museum, which is just a short distance from the Kennedy Compound.

The John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum is located near the Kennedy Compound, a favourite holiday destination for the famous family. Explore the life and times of this American political dynasty through intriguing multimedia exhibits, which highlight John F. Kennedy’s relationship with the Cape Cod area.

The Kennedy Compound on Hyannis Port was frequented by the Kennedy family until JFK’s assassination in 1963. Spot the statue of Kennedy as you approach the museum. Just outside the white-pillared entrance, it depicts the president casually striding across the sand.

Go inside to begin your journey of discovery of JFK memorabilia. Films and pictures covering the period from 1934 to 1963 chronicle his family life, friendships, time spent in Cape Cod and political success, providing a rare glimpse into how one of America’s most defining presidents lived his life.

Exhibits vary, but examples of previous topics include one dedicated to the relationship Jack had with his brother Bobby and another devoted to the summer of 1963, JFK’s last holiday here prior to his death. Bring along tissues, as the touching nature of these personal exhibits has made more than a few visitors shed tears. Check ahead before you visit to confirm what will be offered during your Hyannis stay.

The museum also hosts concerts and other special events from time to time. Irish performer Moya Brennan and Member of Congress Joseph P. Kennedy have both held events at the museum. Check the schedule to see if the museum is offering anything that might interest you on your trip here.

The museum is the starting point for the Hyannis Kennedy Legacy Trail, a 1.6-mile (2.6-kilometre) self-guided route that will show you many of the Kennedy-related sites in the town. Get a copy of the map while you are at the museum or download one from the Hyannis Kennedy Legacy Trail website. The John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum is open daily in peak season, but closed from December 1 to mid-April. There is an admission fee, with children under 8 free. If you’re driving, use free on-street parking, staying within the limited time allowed.
