Enter the Baroque chambers and secret halls that lie within the faux-medieval architecture of this impressive castle in the Bergpark of Kassel.

The Loewenburg Castle is a late 18th-century chateau of mock medieval design. It stands in the center of the stunning Bergpark and was built as a maison de plaisance and a status symbol for the rulers of Hesse. Notice the stark contrast between the quasi-ruined exterior and the Baroque period décor and furnishings inside the castle.

Embark on a guided tour for a comprehensive understanding of the context and history behind the castle. Tours depart hourly and are the only way to visit the building. Make your way through the structure with its many rooms and chambers, including majestic sleeping quarters, an armory of weapons and a chapel of neo-Gothic style.

Stroll through the medieval landscape garden and enjoy the serenity in this natural setting. Take photos of the castle’s Disney-like spires and turrets, with an enchanting backdrop of rolling emerald green hills.

The structure’s name is German for Lion’s Castle. Note that parts of the castle were destroyed during World War II and are in the process of being restored.

The site is open to the public in summer Tuesday through Sunday from morning until late afternoon. In winter, it is open only Saturday and Sunday. There is a fee to gain access to the castle. Youths get free entrance.

Wander through the rest of the vast Bergpark and follow the trails with your family. Stop for a lunch break at the Café Jérôme, the Alte Wache Ristorante Caffé, the Kaskadenwirtschaft Grischäfer or the Hercules Terrace.

Find the Loewenburg Castle in the Bad Wilhelmshoehe part of western Kassel in the region of Northern Hesse. Ride the tram to a nearby stop and walk for less than 20 minutes to reach the castle. See nearby sights, including the Bergpark Wilhelmshoehe, the Zoo am Rammelsburg and the Golf Club Kassel-Wilhelmshoehe.
