Peruse artworks created by one of Zacatecas’ most prestigious abstract artists, as well as international collections of abstract sculptures and paintings.

The Manuel Felguérez Museum of Abstract Art (Museo de Arte Abstracto Manuel Felguérez) presents a beautifully curated holding of abstract artworks by Mexican artists, as well as international names. Sourced largely from the private collection of acclaimed Mexican abstract artist Manuel Felguérez, the Museum of Abstract Art features a careful selection of works spanning the mid-20th century to the present. Learn about the Zacatecas-born artist and follow a timeline of abstract art in Mexico.

Admire the museum’s grand architecture as you enter through its main doors. The 19th-century neoclassical building was formerly a religious seminary and a jail. Today, it contains a broad sweep of significant paintings and sculptures spanning Manuel Felguérez’s mid-century contemporaries to the work of current abstract artists. Wander through the galleries showing Manuel Felguérez’s personal collection, which was donated for the foundation of the museum. The museum opened its doors in 1998 and the state government expanded the venture throughout the following decade.

The light-filled central atrium features two tiers of gorgeous neoclassical arches. Stroll around the sculptures exhibited on the atrium floor and pick a gallery to begin your visit.

Check out 11 large-scale artworks that represented the country at the World Fair in Osaka, Japan in 1969. Joining Manuel Felguérez in this grand undertaking were Mexican artists such as Lilia Carillo, Arnaldo Coen, Francisco Corzas and Gilberto Aceves Navarro. You can also see scale models of the sculptures, known as La Ruta de la Armistad, that were constructed for the 1968 Olympics hosted by Mexico City.

Continue exploring the museum to find over 120 artworks by Mexican and international artists that work in the field of abstract art. Visit the museum’s temporary galleries to see a changing program of exhibitions.

The Manuel Felguérez Museum of Abstract Art is situated in central Zacatecas. Reach the museum from nearby city destinations on foot or catch a taxi. There is an admission fee. The museum is open daily, except for Tuesdays.
