Southampton’s Mayflower Theatre is one of the region’s great thespian haunts. The theatre has rich tradition of hosting dramatic spectacles and shows dating back to the early 20th century. After several name changes and renovations, the theatre is today at its height of popularity with a constant and varied programme to suit audiences of all ages.
Many of London’s famous touring West End musicals and plays make their way to the Mayflower. The programme is truly eclectic, featuring dramatic plays, musicals, magic shows, children’s entertainment and acting workshops. The theatre is also a popular venue for vaudeville, stand-up comedy artists and musical ensembles. Take a tour of the 2,300-capacity theatre for a fascinating look behind the scenes.
Grab a bite to eat before the show at the theatre’s Ovation restaurant. The theatre offers special show and dining packages. Alternatively, check out the many restaurants around the theatre on Commercial Road. Enjoy a drink or light snack at the Footlights Bar during the interval. Peruse the gift shop for theatre-themed jewellery, such as a pair of theatrical mask cufflinks or treble clef earrings.
There is no on-site parking at the Mayflower, and street parking in the area is limited. There are two parking lots along Commercial Road, however early arrival is recommended to ensure you find a spot in time for the show. Ticket prices vary depending on the act and seating area.
The Mayflower Theatre is located near the centre of Southampton, just north of the River Test. Watts Park, East Park and the Southampton City Art Gallery are in close proximity. The theatre is a 5-minute walk from Southampton Central Railway Station and is easily accessible by bus as there are many stops in the area.
