Mount Pitt

Mount Pitt showing tranquil scenes, general coastal views and landscape views

The low-rolling hillsides of Norfolk Island rise up to this central peak, which has a lookout and picnic tables overlooking a sweeping panorama of the island.

Check out magnificent views and exciting hiking trails on Mount Pitt, Norfolk Island’s second-highest peak. Rising to 1,050 feet (320 meters) above sea level, the mountain sits just below the summit of Mount Bates and is located within the Norfolk Island National Park. With commanding views across the island’s pine-dotted hillsides and the nearby islands in the South Pacific Ocean, Mount Pitt is a fantastic spot to appreciate the beauty of the island in its entirety.

Reach the mountain’s gently sloping peak and take in the sweeping panorama from the viewing area at the top. This grassy area has park benches and informative signposts that help to point out some of the island’s landmarks. You’ll see almost the entire perimeter of the island, from its distant northeast corner to Rocky Point in the southwest. Spot the tiny islands of Phillip and Nepean just offshore.

Watch the waves tumbling over the rocky headlands and the broad reef that fronts Kingston. Look for the heritage buildings dotted throughout the Kingston and Arthur’s Vale Historic Area, including the forbidding fort walls of the Quality Row Military Precinct and the old convict jails. You’ll also see the long runway connected to the island’s airport. Stick around to see planes coming in to land on the tarmac.

Bring a picnic to enjoy at the tables on the summit. Sunrise to sunset, Mount Pitt presents mesmerizing views at any time of the day. Embark on one of the invigorating walking tracks that weave throughout the national park. Make the short but steep journey to the peak of Mount Bates or check out Captain Cook Lookout.

Mount Pitt is located to the northwest of Norfolk Island. The peak is a 5-minute drive from the center of Burnt Pine and has plenty of car parking available at the summit. Be sure to bring good walking shoes and water if you intend to explore the hiking trails. The mountain lookout is free to access at any time of the day.
