An innovative and impressive ropeway leads the way to the peak of Mount Tsurumi, a lava dome providing stunning views of the surrounding area. A viewing platform and a range of nature trails greet you at the top. Study the diverse array of colorful wildflowers indigenous to Japan’s higher climbs.
Ride over the fields of cherry blossom trees that flourish in spring on the extraordinary Kintetsu Beppu Ropeway. Reach the upper station in 10 minutes. From here, hike along a nature path for another 15 minutes to reach the summit and its viewing platform. You can also hike up the trail on foot in 2 to 3 hours from either the Toriimae Bus Stop or the Higashi Tozanguchi Bus Stop.
From both the aerial lift and the observation deck, you can see the urban treasures of Beppu and Oita City. Spot Mount Yufu and the Kuju Mountains in the distance, with the sparkling blue of Beppu Bay serving as a picturesque backdrop. Admire the colorful foliage adorning the surrounding hills. In winter, a layer of frost glazes the terrain, while autumn is known for the reds and yellows of the turning leaves.

The ropeway runs daily from morning until late afternoon. One-way and return tickets are available in the stations. Children’s tickets are eligible for discounts.
Mount Tsurumi and the Kintetsu Beppu Ropeway are part of Aso-Kujū National Park. From the city center of Beppu, drive west for 4 miles (6 kilometers) to get to the ropeway, which will take you to the peak in 10 minutes. Explore the region for other gems such as Mount Ohira and the Horita Hot Spring.
