Mousehold Heath has long been a cherished green space and a haven for wildlife. Records show that in the Tudor period its circumference was as much as 22 miles (35 kilometers). Its size has decreased over the years, but it remains the most spacious nature reserve under the authority of Norwich City Council. Visit today and you will still find that there is no shortage of green spaces and wooded areas here for you to discover. The reserve now stands at around 184 acres (88 hectares) in size.

The heath includes a variety of different habitats, but the majority of it is comprised of woods. This type of landscape makes the ideal home for a range of flora and fauna. Try to spot butterflies, dragonflies, lizards, frogs and mice and other small mammals as you stroll the pathways here. Birds you might see include the greater-spotted woodpecker, as well as birds of prey such as the sparrowhawk and the kestrel.

Learn about the natural history of the nature reserve by following the signposted Mousehold Heath Earth Heritage Trail. Check what is happening at the heath before you come. With regular events held here, including the likes of guided walks, concerts, sports games and more, you may find that something fun is scheduled during your visit.

As Mousehold Heath is a public space, it is free for all to visit and is open 24 hours a day. Take the bus from Norwich city center to reach the heath in around 20 minutes. Remember to bring a camera to capture photos of this very picturesque area of the city.
