Plummet down steep slopes at this popular Oregon skiing location. Marvel at the breathtaking scenery of the pine-covered Cascade Mountains.

The 3,700 acres (15 square kilometres) of prime ski terrain of Mount Bachelor Ski Resort offers exhilarating runs for snow seekers of all abilities. The scenic site is also a popular destination in other seasons. Speed down its slopes on skis, board or bike, depending on the month. Hike its trails in sun or snow for year-round thrills.

The resort started in 1958 with just one lift. It has expanded today to include 88 trails of varying levels. Strap on your skis for runs of up to 4 miles (6 kilometres), from heights as tall as 9,000 feet (2,700 metres).

Start practicing the basics on the gentle slopes that lead from Carrousel Chair. Take the Northwest Express for the resort’s longest run and biggest descent, a demanding option for the more experienced skier. Novice skiers and rusty old-timers can hone their skills with lessons.

Visit in summer and pedal around and down the mountains at high speed. Over 13 miles (21 kilometres) of bike trails run from the lifts across rocky terrain and through evergreen forests. Rent or purchase bikes and equipment from stores in town.

Hike through the mountains for a slower but equally awe-inspiring nature experience. The lower area offers gentle routes for less experienced walkers. Trek to the summit for panoramic views of the mountain range. Look north to see the distinctive peaks of the Three Sisters. Reaching the peak is an arduous climb, so be well prepared with water, food and appropriate footwear.

At the end of the day, relax in a lodge in the shadow of the mountain or enjoy an evening meal and entertainment in the city of Bend, about a 30-minute drive away.

Access the area via nearby Redmond Airport, which welcomes flights from Portland, Seattle and Los Angeles, among other locations. A shuttle bus runs from the Bend Park and Ride, carrying passengers straight to the slopes.

Mount Bachelor Ski Resort is blessed with one of the longest seasons in the Northwest, which means you can visit anytime between November and May to enjoy the peak at its snow-covered best.
