The Innenstadtring is the ring that wraps around the Altstadt historic center of Münster. With leafy gardens, waterways and historic attractions, it forms an intriguing green belt just a few steps from the Old Town quarter. Visit the Innenstadtring to appreciate an oasis of serenity and greenery filled with gardens and museums.
Among the highlights of the zone is the Münster Botanical Garden. Inspect the tropical plants in the humid greenhouses and explore the various outdoor gardens. Have a picnic or bit of quiet contemplation near the circular pond and gaze up at the majestic façade of the Münster Castle on the eastern side of the gardens. With its front displaying baroque features and carved statues, the castle is one of the city’s most iconic sights.
Both the gardens and the castle are today managed by the University of Münster, which uses these grounds for classes and events. At the southern end of the gardens stand the Old Münster Zoo and the remains of the Wasserbär, an old walled weir.
As you circle the city center, stroll along the Promenade through which a scenic waterway flows. Browse the trinkets and souvenirs for sale at the Flea Market on the Promenade which is held on certain summer days.
In the southeastern corner of the historic center stands the GOP Variety Theater. Bring the whole family to this eclectic theater, whose shows range from circus to comedy and dance. Admire the equestrian statues at the nearby Ludgeriplatz. Study the array of works from around the world in the Museum of Lacquer Art.
The main Münster train station gives access to the Innenstadtring. After you arrive, travel around by bus or on foot. Walk south from the Münster Cathedral for 15 minutes to reach this station. Take the time to visit surrounding zones, including the Altstadt, Pluggendorf and St. Mauritz.
