Hidden away in a nature reserve, this rugged, wild beach is an exquisite spot to unwind, enjoy the sunshine and cool off in the glittering waters.

Renowned for its secluded, out-of-the way location, Papagayo Beach is one of the most stunning beaches on the island. Situated in the Los Ajaches Natural Park, this striking shoreline is crescent-shaped with rocky cliffs and views across to Fuerteventura. Sunbathe, swim or simply relax amid the beautiful volcanic landscape.

The warm water on Papagayo Beach is clear and calm, making it a favorite spot for families. Pack a picnic and some cool beverages and settle in for a few hours’ stay. Recline on a sun lounger, build sand castles and take a dip in the serene water. If you want to go for a walk, stroll to the nearby nature reserve and look for hobbyists flying kites on the headlands above.

Bring your snorkeling gear and venture under the water’s surface to discover the colorful marine life living below. Several of the local hotels and resorts have excellent restaurants and offer a range of activities, including excursions, horse riding, golf and boat cruises. Stop by the restaurant near the car park for lunch or dinner. Try traditional Spanish dishes, such as paella and tapas, as well as locally caught seafood.

Papagayo is the most visited beach here, but there are several other more peaceful beaches and coves along the coastline that are worth exploring. Slightly quieter stretches include Playa de las Ahogaderas and Playa de la Cera to the west, while east of Papagayo are the tranquil, nudist-friendly havens of Playa Caleta del Congrio and Playa de Puerto Muelas. Playa del Pozo and Playa Las Mujeres are also reserved for nude bathing. If you are venturing to these, bring whatever you need with you as there are few facilities here.

Papagayo Beach is located on Lanzarote’s southern tip and is accessible by a dirt track from the parking area. It is a 20-minute drive from Playa Blanca and there is a fee for parking. If you’re not driving, ride the Princesa Yaiza boat from Playa Blanca instead.
