Gaze up at Natal’s most famous dune on the southern end of this beach. Visit its many stalls, bars and restaurants.

Ponta Negra Beach is a picturesque curved bay flanked by charming boutique hotels and apartments and forested cliffs. Its clear, blue-green water and scenic views make it one of the most popular beaches in the region. Stroll along the 1.5 miles (2.5 kilometers) of white sand that make up this beach to reach the iconic Morro do Careca at its southern point.

Gaze up at this spectacular dune. It is about 325 feet (100 meters) tall and partially covered in trees with a sandy opening. Note that the open patch gives the dune its name, which translates as “Bald Hill.” Climbing on the dune is prohibited, but it provides excellent photo opportunities. Wander along the beach with your kids and go beachcombing for shells and other coastal treasures. Meander in and out of the row of palm trees along the pleasant promenade.

Swim in the sea to cool down after working on your tan under the hot sun. Join the surfers on the waves and try other watersports, such as kite surfing and windsurfing. Watch stand-up paddlers enjoying the view. Stalls set up on the beach sell coconut water and other snacks and refreshments. Ride a buggy up and down the dunes of the beach for a thrilling journey.

The northern side of the beach is fairly built up, with restaurants, hotels and nightclubs. Explore the modern shopping malls during the day, which offer an alternative option during rare cloudy times. Enjoy the lively nightlife in the bars after dining on seafood specialties of the region.

Note that the name of the beach is Portuguese for “Black Point.” Ponta Negra Beach is in its namesake district 8 miles (13 kilometers) south of Natal. Drive along the scenic coastal road between woodland and beaches for 20 minutes to get here. It is just south of Dunes Park and the residential area of Neópolis.
