Vacation in the place where Sikhism started, a northern Indian state that features many ancient temples and shrines amid a lush, green countryside.

Punjab is where the religion of Sikhism was born in about 1500. The towns, cities and countryside of this northern Indian state encompass many sites of religious importance, including centuries-old temples. The region is also known as the Land of Five Rivers, a scenic landscape of great beauty. Visit sacred places of pilgrimage, enjoy wildlife spotting and shop along winding streets lined with bazaars.

Travel to Amritsar and one of the state's most popular attractions, the Golden Temple. The spiritual center of the Sikh religion, this late 16th-century shrine sits on a platform surrounded by a large pool of water. It features a dome and upper story that are plated in gold.

Explore the Maharaja Ranjit Singh Fort, an 18th-century defensive building. Stroll through the elegant surroundings of the Rambagh Gardens, located on the grounds of the summer palace of the Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the founder of the Sikh kingdom.

For additional magnificent buildings, head to Patiala. See the Kali Temple and the Ijlas-e Khas, a palatial building that now hosts the Punjab State Electricity Board.

Whenever you visit a town or city, wander through its bazaars. While in Bathinda, go to Dhobi Bazar, the city’s commercial hub. Browse and purchase clothing, jewelry, electronics and more.

In addition to Punjab’s commercial, cultural, religious and historical attractions, the state also offers diverse natural heritage. Go bird watching at Bathinda’s Harike Wetland and spend a few hours at Chetak Park. Enjoy the fragrant and colorful surroundings of the gardens, walk through the mini-forest and participate in other activities, such as go-carting and boating. Observe wildlife including crocodiles, deer and rhesus monkeys at Deer Park, a mini-zoo in Patiala. Two other deer parks in the state are located in Bathinda and Neelon.

Reach Punjab by flying into the international airports at Amritsar or Chandigarh. Let the state enthrall you with its magnificent temples, historical buildings and myriad natural attractions.
