Salto Grande

Torres Del Paine showing tranquil scenes, a waterfall and a river or creek

Watch as glacial water thunders through a canyon in the heart of Torres del Paine National Park before emptying out into a vast lake.

Salto Grande is one of the most striking waterfalls in Torres del Paine National Park. The power of its water is a striking contrast to the tranquility of the surrounding Patagonian landscapes. Salto Grande is fed by Lake Nordenskjöld and empties into Lake Pehoé. Linger a while to enjoy the views, take memorable photographs and spot some of the park’s varied wildlife.

The best views are from a lookout positioned above the fall’s overhang. Watch as the water comes rushing down a gorge, cascades over a cliff and then creates huge clouds of mist. The booming roar breaks the silence often associated with the park’s glaciers, lakes and valleys. Gaze in all directions at rugged hillsides and tall mountain peaks, including Los Cuernos del Paine (Paine Horns), which pierce clear blue skies.

A wooden staircase takes you down from the lookout to within touching distance of the waterfall and river. You can then continue along the riverbank, although walk with care because spray from the river makes the surface slippery. Wildlife inhabits the area around the waterfall. Spot the wild guanaco and birdlife such as the Andean condor, rhea and owl.

From the waterfall it’s possible to continue on foot for about an hour to the Mirador Cuernos (Horns Lookout). Note how the jagged formations of the Cordillera Paine mountain range resemble horns. On cloud-free and sunny days, the peaks cast a mirror image in the mesmerizing turquoise-blue water of Lake Nordenskjöld.

There’s road access to a car park located a 20-minute walk from the waterfall lookout. The road might be closed during the winter months due to heavy snowfall. Public buses travel to the park from Puerto Natales.

Visit Salto Grande during the summer months to benefit from mild days filled with sunshine. Strong winds are common year round so bring warm clothing in the event of sudden temperature changes. Check the official website of Torres del Paine National Park for park admission fees and accommodations nearby.
