See iconic work from the world’s most famous artists alongside key figures of Brazil’s 20th-century art movements at this modern art gallery.

Visit the Museum of Modern Art (MAM) to discover São Paulo’s premier collection of 20th-century art. Modeled on New York’s Museum of Modern Art, the gallery within the sprawling Ibirapuera Park offers a small but inspiring collection of work from the European Masters and a great introduction into some lesser-known Latin American artists. Discover more than 4,000 works by famous painters such as Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró and Alfredo Volpi.

At the time of its construction in 1948, São Paulo’s Museum of Modern Art was among the first of its kind in South America. The industrial architecture of the museum presents a dramatic contrast to the green surroundings of the park and is a popular photo opportunity. Today, the museum is considered one of the most important in the city. Its sculpture garden within Ibirapuera Park is a popular weekend destination. Wander among the 30 sculptures scattered throughout the leafy grounds of the museum to discover the bold steel work of Amílcar De Castro and the wooden structures created by Carlos Fajardo.

Venture inside to admire the museum’s permanent collection. Breathtaking pieces by Picasso and João Almino adorn the high walls, while a glass room features the enormous spider sculptures of the late Louise Bourgeois. Make the most of the natural light to take some photos of the piece.

Take a break for some food at the museum restaurant. Admire the sculpture garden through the large windows that surround the restaurant as you try local pastel pastries and excellent coffee. Arrive early to enjoy a buffet lunch before exploring the museum.

MAM is located within Ibirapuera Park and can be reached by metro and bus. A private parking area just outside the museum can be used for a fee. The museum is closed Mondays. An entry fee applies, except for Sundays when admission is free.
