Learn about the region’s art and history as you take a tour of this impressive castle in the Lower Saxony city of Wolfsburg.

Schloss Wolfsburg is a tall castle that is now used to house the city museum and art society. Visit the Weser-renaissance structure to hear legends and history of the city and listen to ghost stories.

Tour the city museum to learn about how the German people in Wolfsburg recovered from World War II and pursued urban development. This fascinating story explains the conscious efforts by local leaders to implement growth and integrate foreigners in a way that provided controlled economic recovery and prevented massive unemployment. Look down the hill to see the massive Volkswagen operations as evidence of their plans’ success.

Walk through the surrounding green space known as Schlosspark. Lovely shade trees and green grassy areas cover most of the park. Sniff the roses at the small and neat rose garden. North of the castle is a Baroque garden with beautifully articulated design. On pleasant summer weekends you may expect to see private weddings, public concerts or other events in this peaceful location.

A structure has stood on this site on a small hill since the early 1300s. Notice the row of outbuildings to the west and a moat to the east of today’s castle that show how the residence might have been defended in earlier times. The castle’s history tour will help you appreciate the changes that happened in the community to bring about the modern manufacturing capabilities of the Volkswagen automobile giant. Huge manufacturing facilities lie west of the castle while Wolfsburg’s Old Town is just east.
