The largest recreational park in Hamburg offers sports, play areas and popular picnic and grilling spots, as well as a program of concerts and cultural events.

Stadtpark is the city’s favorite spot for recreation. More than 200,000 Hamburg residents flock here on a fine weekend to enjoy the various leisure activities offered, as well as concerts, grilling and picnics.

This spacious city park was once the private hunting ground of a well-respected businessman before it was sold to the city in 1902. It’s located in the city’s north district of Winterhude. The park stretches across 370 acres (150 hectares) and features neatly kept lawns and flower gardens.

Visit the park in summer, when the outdoor swimming pool is filled and paddle and row boats are available to rent on the lake. Remote-control boats are a common sight here too. Come in the evenings when groups of friends occupy the large grill terrace and crowds gather to see a show at the open-air concert stage. Pay to see big-name international bands and local musicians. Popular entertainers from Bryan Adams to Joe Cocker and Wu-Tang Clan have played here.

There are several restaurants with outdoor terraces that fill up on weekends. Stop for a locally brewed beer and a wurst (sausage). Stroll between dozens of bronze statues scattered throughout the park, and admire the flowers in the rose garden that features 80 different varieties.

At the far end of the park you’ll find the planetarium, housed in the former water tower, which attracts more than 300,000 visitors every year. Go on a journey through the universe, or attend one of the concerts, children’s shows and movies. The tower also features a roof terrace with views over the park and surrounding area.

The park is a short walk from the Borgweg U-bahn station. Parking is available nearby at Linnenring or Hindenburgstrasse. The park is open every day and free to enter. Find concert times and prices on the park website.
