State Theatre

The beautiful mix of architectural styles, from Art Deco to Moorish, makes this newly renovated performing arts venue one of New England’s best.

The State Theatre has been a Portland icon since 1929. Today it remains one of the coolest concert venues in the city. Bringing together a mix of Spanish, Italian and Art Deco styles, plus a state-of-the-art Wurlitzer organ, balconies, paintings and gilded furnishings, it was indicative of the exuberance of the late 1920s. Though it gradually fell into disrepair, it has recently been completely transformed into an intimate 1,870-seat hall that retains many of the lavish details of the original building. Visit the State Theatre for a concert and see how the interior has a way of turning any performance into a splendid work of art.

Approach the theater from the street, the neon sign on the outside acting as a beacon in the Portland dusk. Pause outside and examine the exterior details, setting it apart from the somewhat more restrained buildings on either side.

Join the crowds as they stream in through the front doors and head up the impressive sweeping staircases leading to the hall itself. Reserve seats in the balconies or amid the dancing crowds on the main floor. Wherever your seat, get a great view of the stage.

At intermission, purchase drinks or snacks including popcorn and pizza from vendors stationed at short intervals around the theater. Stretch your legs to dance with the rest of the audience, feeling the energy course through everyone in attendance.

The State Theatre is located in the heart of Portland’s downtown, just across the street from the Portland Museum of Art and other attractions. Portland’s Transportation Center, with bus and rail connections, is a 10-minute drive, 12-minute bus ride or 35-minute walk away. Drive from the Portland Airport in about 15 minutes or take the bus in 35 minutes. Parking is available in public parking garages nearby as well as metered spots on the street and in private garages. Parking is generally available even during events. Tickets are required to access the inside of the venue.

Purchase tickets online or at the Port City Music Hall box office from Wednesday to Friday during regular business hours.
