Story Bridge

This bridge attracts visitors not only for its historical significance, but also for its spectacular bridge climb and its colourful nighttime lighting.

The Story Bridge is more than just a way of crossing the Brisbane River it’s a historical landmark and adventure climbing hotspot. Discover its interwoven steel constructs, climb to its best lookouts or see it spectacularly lit up at night.

The heritage-listed steel bridge was a government project built during the Great Depression as a way of alleviating poverty. The bridge was named after Queensland public servant John Douglas Story. Take some time to visit the historic construction that still today serves as one of Brisbane’s main thoroughfares. For the best views of the bridge, take a boat tour or public ferry along the Brisbane River. Many tours and all ferry services leave from Eagle Street pier, which also hosts great dining options.

Some of the bridge’s most exciting features are its climbing and abseiling platforms. Pre-book this adventure tour, put on the supplied protective gear and follow your informative guide up the steel girders. From the top, you’ll get an incredible view stretching out over the winding Brisbane River from the Scenic Rim to the sparkling waters of Moreton Bay. Although the climb is not cheap, it is safe and a memorable experience.

The adventurous may want try a bridge abseiling experience. See the glistening cityscape while attached to the side of the bridge with a thrilling, yet well-supervised vertical descent.

Walk along the Brisbane River at night and see the bridge lit up with stunning colors. Those lucky enough to visit during the Brisbane Festival in September and on New Year’s Eve may see the bridge and the river illuminated by awe-inspiring firework displays.

Tours leave from the Kangaroo Point end of the bridge, which can be reached by bus or car. Cameras aren’t allowed on climbing or abseiling tours, but a professional photographer accompanies every group. Under the Kangaroo Point side of the bridge sits the historic Story Bridge Hotel, a popular place to go for a meal or drink.
