Tegallalang Village, set in a river gorge in the hills north of Ubud, is famous for its rice terraces. These terraced mountains are some of the most photographed in Bali. Breathe in the fresh air, gaze through the mist as it settles on the mountains, or simply relax under the shade of the coconut palms and enjoy the rural atmosphere.
The rice terraces are more than 2,000 years old. Farmers used primitive hand tools to carve the step-like terraces into the mountains. Supported by retaining walls, the terraces are a system designed to harness water as it flows down the mountain. Rice is an important crop in Bali it is the staple diet and a centerpiece in religious ceremonies. The management and planting of the crops are organised by a central village authority and are tied to a religious and seasonal calendar.
Being a popular site, Tegallalang Village can get crowded. For great views and fewer crowds, go to other side of the terrace. You can also get good views from the café at the top of the hill. If you’re planning on doing a bit of walking, bring your boots as the ground can get wet and muddy.
Tegallalang Village is also known for its art and handcrafted wooden souvenirs. There are a number of vendors selling crafts by the roadside and you can also browse local wares in the surrounding villages.
Located in the centre of Bali, Tegallalang Village is 10-minute drive from Ubud. To get to the village, join an organised tour, or rent a taxi, car or scooter. There is a small entrance fee to drive down the road where the rice fields are located.
