In San Cristóbal de las Casas, México, find the Arco Torre y Templo del Carmen (Carmen Tower Arch and Temple). Discover one of the most important symbols of the city and a beautiful example of construction from the colonial times. Visit the Arco Torre y Templo del Carmen to see a significant religious place for the people of San Cristóbal and enjoy its pleasant surroundings, less crowded than the attractions in the center of town.

The Arco Torre del Carmen was built in the 17th century and is a fine example of Mudéjar Chiapaneco architecture, a style of medieval architecture and decoration strongly influenced by Moorish taste and workmanship. During colonial times, the tower was the bell tower of the Convento de la Encarnación (Incarnation Convent) and the arch was one of the entrances to the city.

Take photos of the pink-and-peach façade of this picturesque tower and notice its intricate white details. Marvel at its quite unusual square shape and its wooden octagonal vault with an eight-pointed star.

Next to the tower find the Templo del Carmen, a 16th-century church that was dedicated to San Sebastián Mártir (Saint Sebastian Martyr). Wander through the interior of this unpretentious yet beautiful place. Notice its extensive wooden paneling and the Capilla del Carmen, a lovely chapel built in the 18th century.

Explore the area surrounding the Arco Torre y Templo del Carmen. Walk along the pedestrian street and the park, find a nice spot to sit for a cup of coffee or Méxican chocolate and buy a local souvenir.

Make sure you stop at the Centro Cultural El Carmen (Carmen Cultural Center), located in the square next to the church. The building was once the Convento de la Encarnación and was constructed at the end of the 16th century. It was later used as a hospital, an art workshop and a school for girls. Learn about the art and culture of the charming Méxican city of San Cristóbal de las Casas and enjoy traditional dancers and singers performing at its center.
