It’s a hotel. We arrived on time on 12/30 (about 5:30pm). Nobody was at the front desk. Nobody-not a clerk, not a bell service person, nobody. Finally the chef in the kitchen came out after repeatedly calling on the desk phone for service. The room had no towels, no water, no soap. Back to the front desk we went...they changed the room. The new room had no heat. This is the day before New Year’s Eve...we wanted dinner in their fine restaurant. The restaurant was closed because the cook staff was preparing for New Year’s Eve day. Closed. No room in the oven for our dinner...and the 4 local restaurants were closed except for an Italian restaurant. We didn’t want Italian food. Back to the front desk...nobody there...called again on the desk phone. Somebody answered...They then said that we could drive to the nearest town (15 kilometer) where there are plenty of restaurants but gave us no names, no directions...nothing. Wonderful. Outrageous! If you choose to go here-don’t...the non service will ruin your stay even though the small town of Thurnau and the castle are picturesque and beautiful It’s a hotel.

Great Atmosphere, service needs improvement.
The atmosphere in the Schloss is great, but the service needs improvement. The front desk was abandoned most of the time.

Charming castle hotel - handy for Bayreuth
I stayed here because it's very convenient for the Bayreuth Festival - an easy 22-25 minute drive away. This castle hotel is charming with a lovely atmosphere and real atmosphere - there's even a beautiful lake with swans next to it. The staff were all friendly, the breakfast was good quality and the free WIFI was fast and reliable. There was also a large (free of charge) car park, which was ideal. My room was on the 2nd floor and there was no lift - it wasn't a problem for me, as I'm relatively young but could be harder for older people or those with heavy luggage. The room was basic, medium-sized and clean. The room and bathroom could do with some modernizing but were pleasant enough for a short stay. It's a real shame there is no airconditioning - under the circumstances perhaps the hotel could provide fans in the rooms? The church bells in the village ring every 15 minutes all through the night (not the hotel's fault, obviously!) which take some getting used to. But I had a very nice stay and would definitely come back here again in the future

Hotel is a castle so fun to sit in the courtyard surrounded by years of history. Room is comfortable. Breakfast is delicious. Dinner is okay but dishes are too salty. Staff is friendly. A good experience.

Not a castle to stay in.
We thought staying in a real castle would be a fun experience. When we arrived about 5:30 pm reception was closed. A note on the door said to call for info on how to get in. Call didn’t go through. Only because someone who had already checked in with great difficulty came were we able to get into a locked box to retrieve our key. The castle was neat from outside but interior and rooms were most ordinary The cleanliness was not up to standard. Breakfast was also so so and containers were sticky. I would pass on staying at this castle.

An enjoyable stay
The old castle is undergoing restoration which must be a massive and expensive operation given that it was constructed over a number of centuries. Staying in a castle is a treat even if the rooms are comfortably modern and the white painted walls and new floors aren't quite what one expects--very fresh and open feeling rather than closed in and dark. From the outside it's everything it should be with old stone walls, a massive gate and a cobbled courtyard. The views are lovely and we constantly stopped and gazed out the windows at the town rooftops as we walked along the wide corridor to the stairs. Keep in mind there is no lift. We only stayed overnight so decided to take up what was needed and leave our suitcases in the rental car. A stroll around the town and also around the small lake near the Schloss, is very pleasant. The breakfast was good and parking is just outside the main gate. The hotel restaurant was closed but there are a few other places to eat in easy walking distance.

Real castle! wow!
After a bit complicated entrance everything was very excellent! They close doors in some point, so when late, you will get the needed info by phone and you will get the keys from small box....in case your phose works, of course! Mine did not! But: the castle is very brilliant, that is probably closest thing for me feeling like princess:) Breakfast was very tasty and looked good. Some places nearby to eat and nice landscapes... so it was a great stay!
