Whitworth Art Gallery is home to some of the finest collections of art and design in the United Kingdom. The ever-changing collections that complement the museum's permanent collection guarantee new art experiences on every visit. You can keep coming back as often as you like, because entry is free.
The Whitworth collects works by emerging as well as internationally renowned artists, many of them local. Behind the Edwardian facade lies a light and spacious gallery. The modernist interior was transformed into the open-plan space you see today by architect John Bickerdicke in 1958. He clearly was way ahead of his time.
The gallery was created in 1889 to inspire the region's textile industry, for the enjoyment of Manchester’s citizens, and to instruct students and artists about the visual arts. The gallery still continues these activities today. Modern and historic fine art prints are displayed alongside textiles and a collection of rare wallpapers.
If you are visiting as a family, be sure to check the schedule of events on the Whitworth’s website. The gallery has a reputation for its attention to the needs of children and young people, who often prefer interactive experiences rather than just viewing. The Whitworth runs family art clubs and other special children’s events. These activities are a great way to keep kids entertained on a rainy morning or afternoon.
Enjoy a drink or meal in the café and browse the bookshop, which has a good selection of art and design books, exhibition catalogues and art magazines.
Whitworth Art Gallery is situated just south of the city centre in Whitworth Park and is easily accessible by public transport. The entrance is only a short walk from Oxford Road train station and you can catch a bus to and from the city centre. There is metered two-hour street parking nearby. Alternatively, you can pay for a space in a parking garage. The gallery is open daily, except Sunday mornings.
