Wroclaw Cathedral

Wroclaw Cathedral which includes a church or cathedral

One of Wroclaw’s most iconic landmarks is a beautiful Gothic structure, and Poland's first brick building, that defines the skyline of Cathedral Island.

Wroclaw Cathedral is among the most important religious buildings in the city. Also known as the Cathedral of John the Baptist, the building is dedicated to St. John the Baptist who is the patron saint of Wroclaw. See the fine artwork and artifacts, including the largest pipe organ in Poland, housed inside this famous landmark. Take in the gorgeous views over Wroclaw visible from the top of the cathedral’s grand towers.

Built between 1244 and 1590, the cathedral is the centerpiece of Cathedral Island. It was the first brick building to be constructed in Poland, and its chancel was the country’s earliest example of Gothic architecture. The building was severely damaged during World War II and was carefully reconstructed after the war. Admire the cathedral’s graceful double spires and inspect the many expressive gargoyles decorating its façade.

Inside, check out the 16th-century altarpiece depicting a sleeping Virgin Mary. Look for an impressive early 20th-century organ, which was built by Walcker Orgelbau. Once the largest organ in the world, it continues to hold the title of Poland’s biggest pipe organ.

Ride the elevator that runs to the top of one of the cathedral’s 299-foot (91-meter) tall towers. In addition to seeing beautiful views over the city, browse the small exhibition dedicated to the cathedral which is found at the top of the tower.

Save time to investigate the cathedral’s 20 chapels. A marble bust of Cardinal Frederick is found above the entrance to the St. Elizabeth’s Chapel. Inside, the Baroque chapel is decorated with a number of other gorgeous 17th-century sculptures and frescoes from the workshop of renowned Italian artist Gian Lorenzo Bernini.

Find Wroclaw Cathedral on Cathedral Island (Ostrow Tumski) in the center of Wroclaw, where it can be reached by tram. The tower is open Monday to Saturday during the summer months and there is an admission fee. The rest of the cathedral is open daily with the exception of mass times.
