Be entertained and educated by the music, light and star shows projected inside the dome of this historic and beautiful building in Jena.

The Zeiss Planetarium is one of the world’s oldest continuously operating planetariums, but it has state-of-the-art systems to rival the newest. First opened in 1926, the building is nestled in a quiet street near the botanic garden, which is worth visiting in its own right. Step inside the planetarium where the excitement happens.

Buy your tickets online or from the box office attendants, who can help you choose the best show based on your preferences and German language ability. Head into the 260-seat auditorium for a journey through space and time.

Go on a psychedelic adventure during the music shows, when the star and laser projectors are fired up for a 360-degree light show set to the music of Queen, Pink Floyd or many others. Be electrified by the sight and amazed by the total immersion of the show.

If your German is good enough, participate in the educational programs, when professional astronomers use the state-of-the-art Zeiss projector to teach all about the stars. Learn the German names for constellations at the children’s shows. Lars, the tiny polar bear, will teach you all about the stars at a language level well suited for German beginners or kids.

Turn your trip to the planetarium into a full evening with a stop at the on-site restaurant, which offers Thuringian specialties as well as international cuisine. Dine on Rinderrouladen (rolled, stuffed beef) or Thüringer Klöße(potato dumplings) in the cozy and authentic ambiance of the restaurant before heading into the theater and letting yourself be transported up into the stars.

The Zeiss Planetarium runs shows every day year-round, though the daily schedule of shows can vary. Book online to avoid disappointment at the box office. Tickets are moderately priced, with music shows costing slightly more than educational programs. The planetarium also offers combined tickets, which include refreshments at the on-site restaurant. The planetarium is walking distance from the northern part of the Old Town. Parking is available on-site. Buses and trams stop a 5-minute walk away.
